Dialing 999 or 112

If you come across something and you need the Fire Service in an emergency , the first thing you need to do is dial 999 or 112 . This is a free number (even from mobile phones) and will connect you to an emergency operator.

You will be asked which emergency service you require.

Tell the operator that you need the FIRE SERVICE.

You then need to stay on the line, whilst the operator connects your call to us. Before we can take your details, we receive information from the operator. They will say something like “Grimsby connecting 01983 525121” . This is the emergency call centre that is transferring your call and your telephone number, information that is very important for us.We will then take the details of the emergency from you.

We need to know:

  • What the emergency is (e.g. fire, car crash, flood, person trapped, etc.)
  • Where it is (e.g. Full address if known, name of road, prominent landmark)
  • How many people are involved – if any
  • Any special problems/hazards that we need to know about
We may ask you some questions – try and give us as accurate an answer as you can but DON’T WORRY IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR TIME. As soon as you have given us the location of the incident, the fire appliances will already be on their way.
