Survival Guide

IF you are trapped by a fire and you call 999, here’s some advice that we would give you:

  • Is there absolutely no way you can get out? If you can,
    GET OUT AND STAY OUT!
  • Open a window, let some fresh air in BUT MAKE SURE THE DOOR IS CLOSED
  • Make sure when you call us that we know where in the building you are and what floor you are on (e.g. first floor, rear bedroom)
  • Keep smoke out – seal the bottom of the door, scrunch something in the gap, a damp towel is ideal but anything will do.
  • Make sure the door is closed behind you
  • Keep calm – you’ll breathe more slowly so make better use of the oxygen and inhale less smoke
  • Keep low – smoke rises so stay below it
  • When we get there, make a noise or wave something out of the window – just try to attract our attention. If you can, hang something out of the window.

DON’T HANG UP THE TELEPHONE – WE’LL STAY WITH YOU.
