Survival Guide
IF you are trapped by a fire and you call 999, here’s some advice that we would give you:
Is there absolutely no way you can get out? If you can,
GET OUT AND STAY OUT!
Open a window, let some fresh air in BUT MAKE SURE THE DOOR IS CLOSED
Make sure when you call us that we know where in the building you are and what floor you are on (e.g. first floor, rear bedroom)
Keep smoke out – seal the bottom of the door, scrunch something in the gap, a damp towel is ideal but anything will do.
Make sure the door is closed behind you
Keep calm – you’ll breathe more slowly so make better use of the oxygen and inhale less smoke
Keep low – smoke rises so stay below it
When we get there, make a noise or wave something out of the window – just try to attract our attention. If you can, hang something out of the window.
DON’T HANG UP THE TELEPHONE – WE’LL STAY WITH YOU.
